No real surprise this. Nonzee Nimibutr’s fantasy action epic Queen of Langkasuka topped the box office charts in Thailand this weekend. The action-packed film has grossed 34.2m baht ($980,000) over five days in Bangkok, helped along by a public holiday on Thursday. The biggest hit of the year there so far was The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor, but this local blockbuster will no doubt blow that right out of the water. The film is due to appear at this years American film market, where fingers crossed, it will get picked up for release in an English language (for that all important DVD release) country.
Synopsis: “War rages on … Princes of neighbouring dynasties have formed a coalition with rebel pirates, plotting to seize the powerful cannon from the Land of Langkasuka. The mass destruction juggernaut, capable of obliterating foes in a matter of seconds, is much coveted by any party seeking to tip the balance of power to their advantage. The three princesses of the land of Langkasuka must at all costs protect their realm from the evil clutches of the ongoing wave of invaders – even if it means putting their own lives on the line.
